A great bass starts from a solid foundation.
We’ve worked hard, taking feedback from our clients, to dial in the right combinations of reclaimed and salvaged woods, high-quality hardware, boutique pickups and electronics that create outstanding instruments.
Our standard models incorporate most of the elements that make our basses special - unique reclaimed woods with history and great stories - built one-at-a-time, specifically for you. We’ve just narrowed the options.
Our build approach for our standard bass models is straight-forward:
Choose from our 3 body styles/profiles - P style, J style or Offset
Choose 4- or 5- string
Choose a trim level - Standard or Deluxe
Choose the pickup configuration that suits your needs
Choose Active or Passive electronics
Standard StoryWood Basses include:
Body: 1.65” thick reclaimed/salvaged solid wood with ergonomic heel in a variety of species, including reclaimed heart pine or water-reclaimed Santa Maria.
Neck: A 34" multi-piece laminate core neck, in reclaimed maple or reclaimed mahogany.
Fingerboard: 9.5” radius is standard. We typically offer a variety of reclaimed tropical species on standard models, with your choice of teak or rock walnut. Upgrades include zebrawood and other figured reclaimed tropical species. “Clay” or black dots are standard.
Frets: 20 frets are standard. 24 fret is available as an upgrade.
Bridge: HipShot Kick-Ass™ is standard, with HipShot A, Babicz Full Contact or Ray Ross Saddleless as upgrades
Tuners: HipShot Ultralite® Bass Tuning Machines are standard.
Pick-ups: Standard models include Aguilar pickups - your choice of 60s P-Bass, 60s or 70s Jazz, MM or DCB Soapbar. Standard configurations are P, P/J, J/J, J/MM, dual MM or dual DCB.
Controls/EQ: Passive circuit is standard with volume(s) and tone control. Aguilar or Trickfish active pre-amps are available as upgrades, and hum-cancelling pickups will be recommended for tone/sound.
Hardware: Standard is Black or Chrome, with Gold as an upgrade

Figured Wood Top: Figured, book-matched reclaimed wood body facing/top with species including walnut, redwood, port orford cedar, curly douglas fir and others
Fingerboard Inlays: Choose from abalone dots, standard blocks or our signature rounded blocks
Custom options include:
Laminated/layered body woods
Neck binding in reclaimed wood or ABS
Fretless - lined or unlined
Piezo saddles and Graph-tech pre-amp
Laser artwork

SWB-1 Standard, Deluxe & Custom - The “other” offset
StoryWood Deluxe/Custom SWB-1 Offset Bass Guitar - with fire-salvaged curly Port Orford Cedar top, a core body of reclaimed maple and reclaimed old-growth mahogany, reclaimed maple neck with water-salvaged Panamanian rock walnut fingerboard. Complete with Ulyate custom Tic-Tac pickups, Aguilar OBP-3 pre-amp, Graphtech piezo saddles and pre-amp, Hipshot A bridge and ultralight tuners.
StoryWood SWB-1 Deluxe/Custom Fretless Offset Bass Guitar - with reclaimed heart pine body, orchard-salvaged walnut top, mahogany neck with reclaimed Kane wood fingerboard. Includes soapbar pickups from Howard Ulyate, a Ray Ross saddleless bridge, passive electronics, and Gotoh tuners. Upgraded special partial fretlines
SWB-2 Standard, Deluxe & Custom - The “J”
StoryWood SWB-2 Standard J Bass Guitar - with reclaimed heart pine body and maple neck from the American Tobacco Co. drying warehouses, a tropical hardwood fingerboard reclaimed from shipping dunnage in Oregon, custom J pickups from Artisan Guitar Electronics, Babicz Full Contact Bridge and Hipshot ultralight tuners. Upgraded block and bound neck.
StoryWood SWB-2 Deluxe J Bass Guitar - with a salvaged flamed redwood book-matched top from California, reclaimed heart pine body from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, reclaimed maple neck with water-salvaged rock walnut fingerboard, custom J/Dual J pickup set from Artisan Guitar Electronics, Aguilar OBP-3 preamp, Babicz Full Contact bridge and Hipshot ultralight tuners.
